How to Install Your Cell Phone Signal Booster Cable

When it comes to installing a cell phone signal booster, running the cable into your home can be the hardest part. Cell signal boosters typically use coax cable to connect the tower antenna and the device antenna to the amplifier unit.

The tower antenna is sometimes called the “outside antenna” because it is usually mounted on the outside of a home on the roof or on a wall. Running the coax from the tower antenna to the booster unit, located inside the home, can present a challenge.

Hopefully today’s post will give you a few ideas to make the task easier. We’ll start with ideas that take less effort and move to those that require more.

First, consider running the cable through a window. By using a short piece of flat coax cable, shown below, that fits under a closed window you can avoid drilling a hole in the wall. Just connect the cable from the tower antenna to the outside end of the flat coax, and to the inside end connect a cable running to the booster unit.

Another recommended method is to run the tower antenna cable under the flashing next to a vent pipe, as shown below. Just make sure if you do this to seal the opening well to avoid leaks.

If your home has a vented attic, seen below, it should be fairly easy to run the tower antenna cable through the vent into the attic. The vent may be screened, and if so, you’ll need to punch a hole in the screen. If you use this method, be sure to seal the hole well around the cable to keep pests out of the attic.

Finally, if none of the previous methods will work, you can go through a wall or soffit, as Derek points out above. This will require drilling a hole to run the cable. We recommend only doing this if you’re comfortable with this task. As mentioned before, if you go this route be sure to seal the hole well around the cable.
